Xingyi or Weining in Autumn? Two Very Different Ways to Travel in Guizhou

If you are choosing one place in Guizhou for an autumn trip, I would put Xingyi and Weining in two different categories rather than rank them on the same list.

Choose Xingyi if you want a comfortable base for several days, with Wanfenglin, Maling River Canyon and Wanfeng Lake spread across a slower itinerary. Choose Weining if you want a higher, quieter landscape built around wetlands, birding, long walks, wind and a more obvious sense of leaving the city behind.

I have spent several days in Xingyi and have also walked and photographed around Caohai in Weining. The important difference is not which place produces the better photo. It is what kind of few days you want to have.

This is not a ranking. The two places solve different travel problems.

Xingyi works best when you stop treating Wanfenglin as a one-time attraction

I stayed in Xingyi for three days. What made Wanfenglin memorable was not one viewpoint. It was being able to return to the landscape at different times of day.

An early run, a bike ride, breakfast near the fields and a slower morning create a different trip from arriving at midday, taking a few photos and leaving. The peaks do not become repetitive on day two. Light, mist, fields and village life change enough to make the place feel more like a temporary living environment than a single attraction.

A useful way to split the trip is simple.

Wanfenglin deserves an early morning or late afternoon window, especially if you enjoy walking or cycling.

Maling River Canyon is a more defined walking destination and feels completely different from the open karst landscape.

Wanfeng Lake can be the slower day after the first two, especially if you have already spent a lot of time on foot.

That is the main strength of Xingyi: you can build a full trip without changing cities every day.

A 2026 report from Guizhou’s ethnic-affairs authorities also described continued tourism and community development around Shuangsheng village inside the Wanfenglin area. The useful signal is not that there is another place to check off a list. It is that the wider Wanfenglin area increasingly supports longer stays rather than a single scenic-area visit.

Weining is better if you want a change of environment, not a dense itinerary

Weining is more selective.

If your idea of a successful trip is a long list of attractions and a busy evening after every day out, it may feel too quiet. If the goal is to leave the normal urban rhythm for a few days, that quietness is exactly the point.

What stayed with me around Caohai was not one standard postcard view. It was walking, photographing birds, feeling the wind and noticing how strongly altitude, sunlight and temperature shape the day.

The other thing I remember is how quickly the trip returned to ordinary things: potatoes after walking, a lamb soup pot, and an evening that did not need another destination on the schedule.

That is why I would not try to fill every hour in Weining.

There is also a practical boundary. Plateau conditions, stronger sun, wind and day-night temperature swings deserve more respect than on a casual city break. If someone in your group is sensitive to altitude or long outdoor days, keep the schedule conservative.

Golden Week in 2026 adds one real constraint: more people

This is not a holiday-event roundup, but the current holiday context matters.

On September 22, 2026, Guizhou announced 16 premium travel routes and 1,394 cultural and tourism events for the Mid-Autumn and National Day period, with 726 scheduled during the holiday window.

The practical implication is simple: autumn is not an empty season in Guizhou. If you travel during the holiday, build margin into transport and accommodation rather than trying to add more attractions.

If you only have three days

For a first visit to Xingyi, three days can already make a coherent trip: give Wanfenglin an early or late window, put Maling River Canyon on its own day, then use the remaining time for Wanfeng Lake and the city itself.

For Weining, I would not divide three days into many small stops. Caohai and the surrounding highland environment reward time, especially if birding, photography or simply slowing down is part of the reason you came.

For families or groups that value transport convenience and a broader range of food and accommodation, Xingyi is easier to organize. For travelers who actively want wetlands, birding and a quieter highland environment, Weining is more distinctive.

With five days, I still would not force both into one trip

They are both in Guizhou, but that does not mean combining them automatically creates a better itinerary.

Xingyi is worth staying in. Weining also needs enough time for its slower highland rhythm. Spending too much of a short trip transferring between two very different regions can remove the reason to choose either of them.

For most first-time visitors, I would choose one.

If you have already spent time in Xingyi and want a different side of Guizhou, add Weining on another trip. If you already know the more urban summer bases and want wetlands and open plateau landscapes, Weining becomes much more interesting.

Autumn in Guizhou does not need another summer itinerary with the month changed in the title. The more useful question is whether you want your three days to feel fuller or slower.
